Notifications & VIP contacts
Control desktop alerts, quiet hours, tier filters, and priority senders.
Fine-tune how Finmail notifies you without missing critical senders. Notification preferences and VIP contacts live on two related settings pages — each page links to the other when you need to adjust the complementary behavior.
Notification center
Open Settings → Notifications → Notification center (/mail/settings/notifications) to configure:
- Desktop notifications — browser permission, on/off toggle, and alert sound
- Tier filter — which new messages can trigger a desktop alert:
- All new mail
- Saved contacts only
- AI-urgent only (high-risk tone, manual urgency, payment risk, and similar signals)
- Saved contacts or AI-urgent (recommended default)
- Quiet hours — suppress non-urgent desktop alerts outside your window; AI-urgent mail can still break through
- Post-market quiet preset — common finance schedule (for example 18:00–08:00)
- New-mail and snooze wake-up toggles — inbox arrival and snoozed-message return alerts
Changes apply immediately and sync to your account on every device where you sign in.
If you use a contacts-based tier filter but have no saved contacts yet, the page offers a shortcut to Settings → Mail → Contacts (/mail/settings/contacts).

VIP contacts
VIP contacts mark trusted senders who should always break through notification filters:
- Go to Settings → Mail → VIP contacts (
/mail/settings/vip-contacts). - Add one email address at a time (addresses are stored in lowercase; display names in From headers are matched automatically).
- VIP senders receive high-priority desktop and push alerts even during quiet hours or when your tier filter would otherwise suppress mail.
VIP senders also show a crown badge in the mail list so you can spot priority threads at a glance.
Related: Desktop notification tiers, quiet hours, and sounds are configured in the Notification center. Use open Notification center on the VIP page when you want to adjust those rules.
How they work together
| Setting | Where | Effect |
|---|---|---|
| Tier filter | Notification center | Limits which senders trigger routine desktop alerts |
| Quiet hours | Notification center | Suppresses non-urgent alerts during your schedule |
| VIP list | Mail → VIP contacts | Listed senders bypass tier and quiet-hour limits |
| Saved contacts | Mail → Contacts | Used by contact-based tier filters (separate from VIP) |
Typical workflow for deal teams:
- Set a conservative tier filter and quiet hours in the notification center.
- Add partners, clients, and deal leads to VIP contacts.
- Combine with Financial barometer and Smart views in the sidebar for market-sensitive inboxes.
