529 and custodial account statement email is a separate row
Finmail Product
A 529 college-savings plan and a UGMA/UTMA custodial brokerage account often sit next to your retail brokerage — and still keep their own contact email and paperless row. Enrolling the brokerage account in e-delivery does not promise that the 529 or the custodial account will follow.
Keep Gmail for everyday mail. Issuers already file @gmail.com. This page is how those rows split — not college-planning advice, not a 529 product, and not a Gmail alternative.
A second Gmail is still the strongest $0 split inside Google. Most people should stop there. Choose another host only if this slice of mail should not live at Google.
Why the row is separate
529 plans are state programs with a program manager. Custodial accounts have a custodian (usually a parent) until the child takes control. Both can store a different delivery preference than the adult’s IRA.
The issuer’s website remains the record. Email is a copy and a reminder. Login, profile, and paperless are still different screens — delivery email is not the login email.
Where people miss the 529 or custodial row
Menus move. Each walkthrough links the issuer’s help.
| Institution | What is easy to miss | Guide |
|---|---|---|
| Charles Schwab | Per-account paperless. Brokerage can be electronic while a 529 or linked Schwab Bank stays on paper. Alliance vs retail. | Change Schwab statement email |
| Fidelity | Some 529, charitable, and International sites are different logins than Fidelity.com eDelivery. UGMA/UTMA can household with other accounts — that is a statement group, not a promise the email moved. | Change Fidelity statements and tax forms |
| Vanguard | A 529 may still need a paper account-information change form if you cannot edit the profile online. Personal Delivery settings vs plan Mailing preferences. | Change Vanguard statements and tax forms |
Index of the other US firms: point brokerage and bank statements at a second mailbox.
A Gmail filter on the parent’s everyday inbox does not edit the 529 file — a Gmail filter does not change broker email.
When the child is the tax owner, 1099s and K-1s still need an address someone will open. The accountant’s portal is not that mailbox — CPA portal vs your second mailbox.
After you save
- Open the 529 or custodial row, not only the household brokerage paperless toggle.
- Keep the old inbox until a live 529 statement or tax notice arrives at the new address. Quarterly 529 cycles are normal.
- If the plan uses a paper form, wait for the program manager to confirm before you stop watching the previous mailbox.
Where the new delivery address should be
| You want | Use |
|---|---|
| Isolation inside Google, $0 | A second Gmail. Most people should stop here. |
| Swiss hosting and end-to-end encryption | Proton Mail — paid Proton, not an unused Free account |
| Generic paid IMAP, not a finance-only product | Fastmail — often enough |
| US-hosted mailbox for investing, banking, and tax, off Google | [email protected] on Professional |
Finmail is Virginia IMAP, not end-to-end encryption. @finmail.com is weaker than a domain you own.
Do not use a neglected Yahoo, Outlook.com, or Proton Free box as the only copy — consumer mailbox inactivity.
What this is not
- Not “turn on brokerage paperless and the 529 follows.”
- Not 529 contribution, beneficiary, or rollover advice.
- Not IRS e-file, not a CPA portal, not Legal Hold.
- Not a request to migrate work mail off Workspace.
- Not a cryptocurrency payment mailbox. Finmail does not send or receive BTC or USDT by email.
Professional is $29/mo, 14-day trial, card required, if the job is a finance-only box off Google.
Frequently asked questions
If my Schwab brokerage is paperless, is the 529 paperless too?
Not necessarily. Schwab enrolls eligible accounts one by one. Check the 529 row, not only the primary email.
Can I always change a Vanguard 529 email online?
Not always. Vanguard’s own 529 change form is still used when the profile cannot be edited on the website.
Is a second Gmail enough instead of Finmail?
Often yes. A second Gmail is isolation inside Google and costs nothing. Most people should stop there. Choose Finmail only if this mail should not live at Google.
