If your requirement is zero-access encryption and Swiss jurisdiction, Proton Mail is built for that job. This article will not argue that Finmail is “more secure,” faster, or that AI recovers an hour a day.

Finmail is a different product: an owned mail stack (Dovecot IMAP + SMTP + webmail) aimed at finance-oriented identity and workspace controls, with production hosting in Virginia, United States, commercial operations in Hong Kong, and R&D in Shanghai.

Choose Proton when

  • A counterparty, counsel, or personal threat model requires E2EE and a Swiss operator.
  • You are already in the Proton ecosystem (VPN, Drive, Pass) and want one vendor.

Choose Finmail when

  • You want US Virginia production IMAP for a finance-dedicated mailbox, and you accept that mail is server-readable — not Proton-style E2EE.
  • You already decided to leave Google and do not want Swiss zero-access.
  • You want a finance-only box at $29/mo. That is less encryption, not a claim that Finmail is more professional than Proton.

If Swiss hosting plus zero-access is the requirement, Proton is the product. Finmail will not argue otherwise.

Proton Free is not paid Proton. Proton may delete a Free account after 12 consecutive months without signing in to or using any Proton service. Paid Proton plans are not deleted for inactivity while subscribed. That is Proton’s billing-tier rule — not a claim that Finmail keeps mail longer, or is more private. A neglected @proton.me is a poor vault for statements: consumer mailbox inactivity.

US production hosting versus Switzerland

Search queries that say “email hosted in the United States” and Proton’s Swiss story are different jobs. Proton’s model is Swiss jurisdiction and end-to-end encryption. Finmail’s production region for application metadata and related systems is Virginia. Message bodies stay on IMAP. Commercial operations are in Hong Kong. Shanghai R&D does not hold production mailbox credentials on the default engineering path — details on the Security Trust Center.

That is a hosting and operating-model choice, not a claim that Finmail is “more secure” than Proton. If the requirement is E2EE and Switzerland, stay with Proton. If the requirement is a US production region for a finance-oriented second mailbox, Finmail is built for that comparison.

What we will not say

We will not claim a 1-hour-per-day AI dividend, and we will not position Finmail as “Gmail, but encrypted like Proton.” Those are different jobs. Read Finmail vs Gmail if the question is consumer Gmail vs a hosted finance identity. If generic paid IMAP is the job, Fastmail is often enough.

Finmail is not a cryptocurrency payment mailbox. It does not send or receive BTC or USDT by email.
