How to change your Vanguard email for statements and tax forms
Finmail Product
Vanguard sends e-delivery notices when statements, confirms, and (where available) tax forms are ready on their site. If the address on file is your everyday Gmail, those notices mix with everything else. This page is how to change the Vanguard email — not a pitch that Vanguard Institutional should buy Finmail, and not IRS e-file.
Keep Gmail for everyday mail. Vanguard already files ordinary addresses, including Gmail. You are only choosing which mailbox should get the next notice.
Personal accounts vs employer plans
Vanguard’s e-delivery consent splits the path:
- SSN and EIN accounts (retail mutual fund / brokerage): Account maintenance → Delivery settings under Mail preferences.
- Plan accounts (workplace): My Profile → Mailing preferences.
Statements, confirms, tax forms, prospectuses, and proxies can be separate elections. E-delivery overview notes that some employer-plan tax forms and some trust proxy materials are not offered online. Moving the email does not create a PDF Vanguard does not publish.
If e-mail to the address on file bounces, Vanguard says they may retry and then switch mailing preferences back to paper. Update the address before you abandon the old inbox.
A 529 plan may still use a paper change form if you cannot edit the profile online. Institutional / advisor-web users are not this page.
Change the Vanguard email and delivery settings
- Sign in at vanguard.com (or the plan site you actually use).
- For a personal account: Account maintenance → Delivery settings. For a workplace plan: My Profile → Mailing preferences.
- Open the link for e-mail address (or the equivalent label) and save the mailbox that should receive notices. Vanguard sends a confirmation; if they cannot confirm the address, they may leave you on paper.
- Set statements and tax forms (when the toggle exists) to e-delivery at that same address — or keep paper if you want both.
- If you hold both a brokerage login and a plan login, repeat on each. One does not update the other.
Menus move. Finmail cannot change Vanguard’s records. Tax-form timing is on Vanguard’s site; email is the notice that a form is ready.
Wait until a statement notice and, in season, a tax-form notice arrive before you stop watching the old inbox. If you moved from the older mutual-fund platform to brokerage mid-year, Vanguard may issue two sets of tax forms — both should use the new address.
Where the new address should be
| You want | Use |
|---|---|
| Isolation inside Google, $0 | A second Gmail. Most people should stop here. |
| Swiss hosting and end-to-end encryption | Proton Mail |
| Generic paid IMAP | Fastmail. |
| US-hosted mailbox for investing, banking, and tax, off Google | [email protected] on Professional |
Finmail is Virginia IMAP, not end-to-end encryption. @finmail.com is weaker than a domain you own. Brokers file Gmail every day. A new domain can hit filters.
After you save
- Watch for a bounce that would revert you to paper.
- Update Schwab, Fidelity, IBKR, and Chase separately.
- CPA threads: where to receive K-1s and 1099s. Vanguard 1099s are only one issuer.
Professional: $29/mo, 14-day trial, card required.
What this does not do
- It does not replace Vanguard’s document center. Notices usually require a login to open the file.
- It does not file your return.
- It does not apply to Vanguard Institutional web-registered firm users.
