Finmail vs Fastmail: finance-only mailbox vs generic paid IMAP
Finmail Product
Fastmail is the closer architecture to Finmail: paid IMAP that does not live at Google. This page will not rank Finmail above Fastmail.
Keep Gmail for everyday mail. A second Gmail is still the strongest $0 split inside Google. Most people should stop there.
Choose Fastmail or Finmail only if this slice of mail should not sit at Google.
Side by side
| Fastmail | Finmail Professional | |
|---|---|---|
| Job | Generic paid IMAP (and your own domain, if you buy that) | Finance-only second mailbox for investing, banking, and tax |
| Not Google | Not Google | |
| Hosting | You can keep the primary copy in the US or the EU at signup. An EU primary is still replicated to the US | Production IMAP in Virginia; commercial operations in Hong Kong |
| Encryption | Transport TLS; mail is server-readable (not Proton-style E2EE) | Transport TLS; mail is server-readable. Not end-to-end encryption |
| Identity | @fastmail.com or a domain you attach |
[email protected] (hosted). Own domain is Team |
| Price (self-serve) | Fastmail’s own plans | $29/mo, 14-day trial, card required |
US production is not Finmail’s increment over Fastmail. Fastmail can already keep a US primary. The increment is a finance-dedicated box, not “more American IMAP.”
Choose Fastmail when
- You already decided to leave Google and you want ordinary paid IMAP — mail, calendars, a domain, a host that is not a finance product.
- You want a US or EU primary region at signup and you accept Fastmail’s replication model.
- You do not need a finance-only SKU, Secure Share for K-1s, or Finmail’s webmail.
If generic paid IMAP is the job, Fastmail is often enough.
Choose Finmail when
- The job is a second mailbox for US investing, banking, and tax, and you will actually change Schwab / Fidelity / Vanguard / IBKR / Chase / CPA records.
- You want Virginia IMAP that is finance-only, not a general-purpose host, at $29/mo.
- You accept that mail on the server can be read (on-demand AI and Secure Share depend on that). If you need Swiss zero-access, that product is Proton, not Finmail and not Fastmail.
A hosted @finmail.com address is weaker than a domain you own. Brokers file Gmail every day; neither suffix is a stronger From than [email protected].
What we will not say
- Finmail is not a Fastmail alternative.
- We will not claim US hosting makes Finmail more private or more secure than Fastmail.
- We will not say Gmail is “not enough.” Read Finmail vs Gmail.
- Finmail is not a cryptocurrency payment mailbox. It does not send or receive BTC or USDT by email.
