How to update Interactive Brokers notification email

Interactive Brokers sends trade confirmations, margin and funding notices, statements, and tax documents to the email on the user record. If that address is your main Gmail, those notices mix with everything else. This page is how to update the IBKR notification email in Client Portal — not a phishing guide, and not a reason to move a home-country bank.

Keep Gmail for everyday mail. IBKR already delivers to ordinary addresses, including Gmail. The change only chooses which mailbox gets the next confirm.

This walkthrough is for US-rail brokerage mail (IBKR LLC and related US tax packs such as 1099s when you are a US person). Pointing a local bank in Hong Kong or Singapore at a US mailbox is a different job.

Email address and alert destination

IBKR splits the account email from where alerts go. Changing one does not always change the other.

Official steps (source of truth; the portal layout changes):

If you maintain several accounts, Client Portal may open an account selector before the form. Repeat the change where each username or account still points at Gmail.

Change the IBKR email address

  1. Sign in to Client Portal.
  2. Open Settings → Communication → Email Address (under User Settings on some layouts).
  3. Enter the new address twice. If you use IBKR’s Secure Login System, continue through username, password, and device prompts as the guide describes.
  4. Enter the confirmation number IBKR emails. If you still have the old inbox, they may send that code there; if you do not, they send it to the new address and the request can sit in internal review.
  5. If you leave the page before confirming, finish the item under Pending Items — the change is not complete until you confirm.

IBKR documents this flow; Finmail cannot complete the verification for you.

Point alerts and documents at the same mailbox

  1. Open Settings → Communication → Alert Notifications.
  2. Set Destination to the same email (or leave alerts off if you truly want none). Save.
  3. In reporting / statements preferences, confirm that statement and tax-form notices still use that address. Trade confirms and monthly statements are easy to split by accident.

Do not close the previous inbox until a live confirm or statement arrives at the new address. Review delays are normal when the old mailbox is gone.

Login and account quirks

  • User email vs account. The Client Portal change is tied to the username you signed in with. An advisor master, a client login, and a second individual account can each still point at Gmail. Use the account selector; one save does not rewrite every linked user.
  • Alerts vs statements vs tax PDFs. Alert Notifications only set the default destination. Statement delivery can be consolidated or per-account under reporting settings. Year-end 1099s for IBKR LLC are often downloaded under Reports → Tax → Tax Forms; the email is a notice, not the form itself.
  • US entity vs other IBKR companies. This page is US-rail mail (IBKR LLC confirms, statements, and US tax packs when you are a US person). An IBKR UK / Singapore / Hong Kong entity may use a different portal path and will not issue a US 1099. Do not treat that login as a substitute for this change — and do not point a local bank at @finmail.com.
  • Admin / Account Communication. Some layouts use User menu → Settings → Account Communication → Email Address. The confirmation-code and Pending Items rules are the same.

Where the new address should be

You want Use
Isolation inside Google, $0 A second Gmail. Most people should stop here.
Swiss hosting and end-to-end encryption Proton Mail
Generic paid IMAP Fastmail. Not a finance-only product.
US-hosted mailbox for investing, banking, and tax, off Google [email protected] on Professional

Finmail is Virginia IMAP, not Google, and not end-to-end encryption. Commercial operations are in Hong Kong. @finmail.com is weaker than a domain you own. A new hosted suffix can occasionally hit filters. Brokers file Gmail every day; this is not a stronger From line.

Finmail does not promise that IBKR mail will always land. Notices still travel the public internet. Unexpected password-reset mail still needs the same caution it would in Gmail.

Cross-border readers: only the US brokerage / US tax slice belongs on this box. Local bank mail stays on the inbox you already use there.

Professional: $29/mo, 14-day trial, card required. Cancel before day 15. No firm MX change.

What this does not do

  • It does not enroll you in IBKR. You change an address you already have.
  • It does not replace Client Portal, TWS, or IBKR’s document center.
  • It does not make Finmail a crypto payout mailbox.
