Pakistan – Lassi (Punjabi Drink)

INTRODUCTION TO THE DRINK

Lassi is the traditional national drink of Punjab , Pakistan. It is the fusion of yogurt and milk, can be made in varieties of flavors like either you can add salt according to the taste and also sugar is added so the healthy sweet drink is ready to win every heart.

VARIETIES OF LASSI

There are many varieties and taste of the lassi now used to flavor the drink like

  • Salted lassi
  • sweet lassi
  • chatti k lassi
  • mango lassi
  • mint lassi
  • strawberry lassi
  • green cardamon lassi
  • chocolate lassi etc

This is the unique dish common in the area of Punjab and has unique way to serve it in earthen pot, clay pot or on steel huge glasses. It is made by blending the yogurt and milk for long time by wooden hand blender in the traditional way

TRADITIONAL CLAY POT FOR MAKING LASSI IN PUNJAB

This is the special pot made up of clay, milk and yogurt is added in the pot and wooden hand blender is used to mix it for long time about 15 to 20 minutes so the butter comes out of the drink on the top and serve this drink by adding butter on the top of the glass.

There are huge amount of the street shops in the area of Punjab where many varieties of lassi flavors are sold not even in summers but it is sold also on the winters because this drink is among the most favorite drinks of the Pakistan in the area of Punjab.

Pride of the Punjab, the smooth creamy buttery drink just refreshed you in the summers to enjoy the feast of drink with zest. A sip of drink having butter and cream on the top makes you go in the heaven of taste.

HISTORY

The Punjab region of Indian subcontinent, where all the population lived together has same taste and values, this dish is now after separation included in the all national cuisines. Even now in the Punjab area of India and Pakistan this dish is found on the every corner of the street.

INGREDIENTS FOR SALTED LASSI

  • 1 liter milk
  • 1/2 kg yogurt
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 1 glass water

METHOD OF MAKING

Take a hand blender or the electric blender, add all the ingredients and blend it until the creams comes out on the top of the drink than serve it in clay pot.

INGREDIENTS FOR SWEET LASSI

  • 1 liter milk
  • 1/2 kg yogurt
  • 8 tbsp sugar
  • 1/2 tsp green cardamom powder

METHOD OF MAKING

Take a blender and add all the ingredients into the jug and mix it until butter / cream comes on the top of the drink and you can enjoy it.
